After 59 days in release, Avengers: Endgame is inching towards the top all-time worldwide box office position, currently held by James Cameron’s Avatar, and only $38.4 million separates the two contenders. Disney will be seeking to prime the pump for at least one more final box office push by releasing an amended edition into theaters on June 28.
The last week’s full reported numbers had brought in another $5.5 million domestically and $2.4 million internationally, but with each passing week the numbers continue the typical downtrend, making it progressively harder to catch up with Avatar. However Disney isn’t beyond pulling out a few tricks to try to claim the #1 spot. Beginning with the last weekend of June and then heading into the long 4th of July weekend, Disney is expected to put some marketing push to raise awareness of new content being added into the film. In a recent interview with Screen Rant, MCU mastermind Kevin Feige clarified a bit around what the new release was and what it was not, “[It is] not an extended cut… If you stay and watch the movie, after the credits, there’ll be a deleted scene, a little tribute, and a few surprises.”
According to Box Office Mojo, the Endgame re-release will need to earn about $38.4 million to pass Avatar worldwide. As of this writing, Endgame is at $2.749 billion globally, while Avatar is at $2.788 billion. It’ll be interesting to see how the re-release performs, particularly because it won’t be something as exciting as a Director’s Cut or a full Extended Edition. It will return to the Marvel tradition of a post-credits scene, so fans will want to see what surprises are in store. The total additional runtime appears to be in the six minute range, which isn’t a lot of new material, especially considering the original runtime already clocked in at a meaty three hours and two minutes. There hasn’t been a lot of word regarding what the deleted scene might be, however if they were wanting to pack in the most emotional punch available that had been left on the cutting room floor, it could be the Tony Stark scene with 13 Reasons Why actress Katherine Langford.
If the current week’s numbers bring in an an additional total worldwide haul in the $5 to $6 million range, and the re-push over the holiday weekend stops the dropoff and brings in an estimated $15 million worldwide over the pre and post holiday, then the gap between first and second place will be down under $19 million. Combined with a potential revitalized interest with Spider-Man: Far From Home opening in the same window (in the same fashion that Captain Marvel got a late-term boost when Avengers: Endgame released), we could see it inching past the finish line by late July. If it does run out of steam early, Disney may look towards doing a larger-sized re-release in the fall over the course of the holiday season before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker settles in to dominate the December box office.
While Disney’s goal with their latest push is to claim the worldwide box office crown, the domestic title holder remains safely in the grips of the studios other major tentpole franchise, Star Wars, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens standing solidly ahead of Avengers: Endgame by just under $100 million (The Force Awakens saw $936 million in domestic revenues versus Avengers: Endgame sitting currently at $834 million).
