Mary Poppins Returns star Emily Blunt reveals that she would reprise the titular character if her upcoming film were to get a sequel. Mary Poppins Returns is a sequel, not a remake, to the original Disney classic that was released over 50 years ago. The film will star Blunt as Mary Poppins and will be directed by Rob Marshall, who is known for directing other musicals such as Chicago and Into the Woods.
While it has been 54 years since Mary Poppins was first released, this sequel takes place only a couple of decades after the first film, revolving around a now grown up Michael and Jane Banks. Along with Blunt, Ben Whishaw will play Michael, and Emily Mortimer will play Jane. The film will also star the creator of the Broadway musical Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, as a lamplighter named Jack. While the film hasn’t even hit theaters yet, one star is already prepared to return for a sequel.
When talking with CBS News about her role in Mary Poppins Returns, Blunt confirmed that she would indeed return as Mary Poppins if her film gets a sequel. Since Blunt compared her character to a superhero, and superhero movies always get sequels, CBS asked Blunt if she would want to see a sequel to which the actress replied, “I would! I want to be her again. I like being her. She’s completely bizarre and unknowable. What I love about her is really what Travers said about her: ‘In order to fly, you need something solid to take off from.’ And I love that about her. Practical, yet magical”.
Even though Disney is still focusing on the release of Mary Poppins Returns, fans shouldn’t rule out a sequel. Many people believe that Blunt was the perfect fit to replace Julie Andrews, but Dick Van Dyke will be returning for a cameo role in Mary Poppins Returns. Disney has also cast Colin Firth and Meryl Streep, who have both won Oscars in their acting careers. Mary Poppins Returns may have already sparked Oscar talks, but the film will truly need to be unique if it hopes to not only get a sequel, but beat the original film’s five-Oscar wins.
The release of the film may still be a few days away, but early reviews for Mary Poppins Returns have been overwhelmingly positive. Screen Rant’s own review praised Mary Poppins Returns for paying tribute to the original, while still becoming something special on its own. While the film will be going up against Warner Bros. Aquaman this weekend, Disney usually has a pretty good track record of turning their projects into box office hits. With that in mind, fans should expect another sequel sooner rather than later.
