Director David Ayer’s social media activity has reignited rumors that Baby Driver’s Eiza González may be Catwoman in Gotham City Sirens. Warner Bros. is exploring several avenues that will keep Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn front and center as their DC movie universe continues on. The quickest option for her to return to the role appears to be in Suicide Squad 2, but that is just one of many Harley Quinn projects in development. While a Birds of Prey appearance was at one time rumored and a Harley Quinn vs The Joker movie now also being discussed, it has been Gotham City Sirens that appears to be the farthest along.
Suicide Squad director David Ayer is re-teaming with Robbie for this potential spinoff that would bring Poison Ivy and Catwoman into the universe. Gotham City Sirens is still said to be in development despite several other projects popping up, and has been the one Harley movie to continue to see new rumors appear. The latest speculation is reigniting a previous rumor from this summer.
As pointed out on Reddit, David Ayer recently followed Eiza González on Twitter, leading some to wonder if she will indeed (or already has) landed the role of Catwoman in Gotham City Sirens. This should be taken with a grain of salt as it could merely be a coincidence or Ayer saw Baby Driver and was a fan of what she did. But, when this activity (and her new Catwoman like haircut) is added to previous clues of her visiting the Warner Bros. lot and showing photos of her recent Catwoman-esque uniform, there is a compelling case to be made.
González would be an interesting choice to play Selina Kyle if she is indeed cast. At only 27, she is the exact same age as Robbie, making them a pairing that could continue on for years to come if Gotham City Sirens launches a franchise. She is also not yet a huge star, so Catwoman could be her big role that she becomes known for, giving Warner Bros. an up and comer in the process.
That all said, there is no indication that Sirens is even in the casting process at this point. The only updates on the film’s development have been about Ayer still being attached to the project, and that it is still something the studio is developing. What stage the script is in, when it could potentially film, and how much of a priority it is for the studio are all questions that need to be answered. With Suicide Squad 2 moving forward first, it still may be some time before Gotham City Sirens comes out, thus delaying González’s debut - if she is Catwoman after all.
Gotham City Sirens is currently in development and does not have a release date.
