Even though the trailer doesn’t show much, the name itself gives an idea of what the gameplay might be like. That’s because the Empires offshoots of Dynasty Warriors games fuse Musou-style combat with more strategic elements.
The goal is usually the same — conquer China — but while the DW Empires formula still uses the “one warrior versus a thousand opponents” setup, there’s more involved.
Tactics such as negotiations and alliances play an important role. Players can take on quests, join another army and rise through the ranks, or do whatever it takes to bolster their forces and prepare for the next battle.
Presumably, Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires will be no different. Whether it does away with the divisive open-world setting from Dynasty Warriors 9 or at least improves it remains to be seen, though there’s plenty of room to improve.
